There have been a lot of questions of exactly what your link directory can do for you so I decided to write a tutorial on it. The link directory is a very great tool to advertise on other WAHM/WAHD's site. This gets your store exposure to many markets you might not of had before and plus it is FREE to do this.
The link directory can only be used in Mode 4 in feature cart!
There are two options for doing links in Mode 4. You have the option of using your link page or the link directory. It is a much more beneficial to use the link directory instead of the link page since you have to manually add all links in the links page.
How to make your link directory show up on your store template: - Login to your feature cart store setup
- Click on configuration
- Scroll down to mode 4 and click on HTML Store Template
- Find the location in your HTML that you would like for your Link Directory to show up. Commonly these codes are placed near the %PAGES% code
- You then will plug in this code: %LINKDIR%
- If you want to have a graphic instead of text you need to put in this code: %LINKDIRB%
- Make sure that you upload your graphic under files & pictures utilities.
- Read below how to link your new graphic to your code if you choose that route.
How to access your link directory: - Login to your feature cart store setup
- Click on configuration
- Scroll down to mode 4 and click on Link Directory
The Control Link: - Click the control link (located on the right hand pane at the top left).
- Make sure you select Y under "Link Directory Active".
- Under link to the directory you can determine if you wanted text or a graphic.
- Require Reciprocal Link: This is up to you. I always require one since this means that if someone puts their link on your site they have to put your link on theirs.
- Popular Links: I'm not exactly sure what this is for. :)
- Table border: This is the color of the border that will be around your link directory. If you want the border to be white you need this code (#FFFFFF) and if you want it to be black you need this code (#000000).
- Table background color: This is the color of the background of your link directory. If you want the border to be white you need this code (#FFFFFF) and if you want it to be black you need this code (#000000).
- Latest Links: This will show the latest links either you have added to your site, or someone else has added. Choose how many you want to show max.
- Days for a new listing: This is how many days you will show a link as new.
- Number of links per page: This is how many total links you want per page.
- Show latest links list: If you select 0 it will NOT show, if you select 1 it will show.
- Show category description: If you select 0 it will NOT show, if you select 1 it will show.
- Notify Administrator: This will notify you (or not) if you choose to know each time a link has been added to your link directory. If you select 0 it will NOT notify you, if you select 1 it will notify you.
- Automatic Link Approval: This is always a good idea to put as no. There is lots of spammers who will go in and put unfriendly links in your directory. If you select 0 it will require your approval, if you select 1 it will not require your approval.
- Allow images in your links: This is where that nifty 468*60 banner your designer has made for you comes in handy. If you select 0 it will NOT allow banners, if you select 1 it will allow banners.
- Website Link Text and Description: This is the text that anyone using your link directory will be prompted to add to their site. Obviously you would want to put the name of your store or business in the Link Text and in the description box you want to put exactly what your business or store is about.
- Banner filename: This is the name of your banner file
- Banner URL: This is the url link to where your image is stored. You can store it on your site or any image places like photobucket.
- HIT SAVE CHANGES DOWN AT THE BOTTOM BEFORE YOU LEAVE THIS PAGE!!
Next click on the "Add Category" link
This is where you will decide what categories you want on your site. When someone places a link in your directory they will be looking for the category that matches their site best. Here are a list of examples of categories you can use. - Web Design
- Invitations & Favors
- Handmade Items & Crafts
- Cloth Diapers
- Wrapping Supplies
- Women & Men's Accessories
- Baby & Toddler Products
- WAHM Information
- Jewelry
- Pregnancy
- Toys & Such...
- Bath & Body Products
- Pet Products
This is just a list of suggestions. Regardless if you chose to show the category descriptions or not there has to be something written in the box. You can just put a general statement about the products that would go in each category.
Make sure you hit add category after you are done with each category.
Admin Categories:
Before your categories show up on your site you have to make sure you put the check mark under the "A" category in order to make the category active. After you have put the check mark in the box hit the "activate" button.
Now your link directory is set up for other people to add their links to your site.
Add a link:This is used for when you want to add someone's site to your link directory. Most people use this option if they are on someone else's link directory and have to add that site's link to their site before adding your site to their site (I know that comes across as very confusing).
- Link Title: The other sites store or business name
- URL: The store or business url. Please make sure you have the HTTP:// at the front of the url or the link will not work.
- Link Description: This is normally found on the other's link directory page (under the submit a link). This would be where what they sell, etc would go.
- Image URL: If the other person has a banner this would be where the url would go.
- Select a category: You would select from the drop down menu where you think it is best for this link to go.
- You do not have to fill in the last three boxes if you don't want to. This is only required when you are adding your link to another site so they can contact you if needed.
- Hit submit link.
Admin Link Entries:
If someone has added a link it will show here. If you look at the box you will see two numbers beside each category. The first number shows how many active links you have, and the second shows the inactive links. The inactive links means someone has added their link to your link directory and you need to approve it.
- Click on the category that has an inactive link in it.
- Put a check mark in the box next to it in the "A" category
- Hit activate.
Reviews & Ratings:These really don't get used that often, and most often get hit by spammers. This would be where someone could write a review on a link you have on your site. :)
